Whether you’re familiar with the Nutcracker or not, you’re in for a treat! We aka Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, are putting on our annual winter showcase of ‘Urban Nut.’ What is this you ask? It’s a modern rendition of the classical version of the Nutcracker ballet. There may be a drag queen, some random acts of fun and even a few laughs. I promise you it’s a good time! It’s all rather interactive in an intimate and safe atmosphere.
Taken directly from our company’s site:
‘Urban Nut is the story of an audience member who falls asleep at a performance of The Nutcracker and dreams about the story set in present day L.A. where they are the starring character, Clara. The events play out in bizarre and beautiful ways, with a motley crew of characters and an awesome contemporary soundtrack. The story ends and they are woken by the applause of the audience, left in their seat wondering what just happened.
To play the role of Clara, a member of the audience will be selected each night. This role is not gender specific, so gentlemen…do not be shy. Please submit your name if you are interested when you arrive at the performance.’
Directed by Kate Hutter with choreography by LACDC company members (including me). I choreographed the ‘Russian’ portion of the show in Second Act when Clara is in dream world. Now this isn’t your ordinary Russian variation from the Nutcracker; in fact we are instead Russian Matryoshka dolls in all different ‘planes’ of space.
Don’t be afraid…. Come check it out and get into the action!
